Description

Delete Tags by Type deletes names or events. You must choose a tag type, and you may also choose to retain tags based on specific criteria.

This command deletes the instances of the tag, not the tag definition. If you delete all instances of the tag, you can use TMG to delete the tag definition, if desired.

Tags that are linked to exhibits and/or research log tasks will not be deleted.

This feature permanently deletes data. Use it with extreme caution. Backup your database before you begin. Use the "Log Only" feature to preview the results. After you actually delete the data (Log Only unchecked), review the results in TMG before deciding if you want to keep the changes or revert to your backup.

Step by Step

  1. Choose Delete Tags by Type from the function tree.
  2. Choose the tag you would like to delete from the list.
  3. Check or uncheck the Retain if primary checkbox, as desired. If checked, the program will retain all tags that are marked Primary.

The program will not delete primary names, so this option is not available when a name tag is selected.

  4. Check or uncheck the Retain if date not empty checkbox, as desired. If checked, the program will retain all tags that have a date. Sort Dates are ignored; the tag must have an actual date.
  5. Check or uncheck the Retain if place not empty checkbox, as desired. If checked, the program will retain all tags that have at least one location field that is not empty.

Names do not have locations, so this option is not available when a name tag is selected.

  6. Check or uncheck the Retain if memo not empty checkbox, as desired. If checked, the program will retain all tags that have a memo that is not empty.
  7. Check or uncheck the Retain if has citation checkbox, as desired. If checked, the program will retain all tags that have one or more citations.
  8. Set the Flag Filter, if desired. Tags will be deleted only for people who pass the flag filter; tags are retained if either principal fails the flag filter criteria.
  9. Click the [Delete Tags] button.

For each tag of the specified type, the program will evaluate the retention criteria, and delete the tag if appropriate. If a tag is deleted, the citations associated with the tag will also be deleted.
