Bill Parenteau Tops Warren With 7-Hitter
Another fine pitching by Lefty Bill Parenteau and timely hitting by his mates gave Coach Barney Garrity's unbeaten St. Raphael Academy baseball forces their 10th straight Eastern Division triumph, 4-2, over Warren yesterday.
The win was Parenteau's fifth of the season and it was the second for the Saints over the Warren crew. Previously they had defeated Warren on Pete Miniati's seven-hitter, 6-3.
The Saints opened the scoring in first inning when George Agostini belted Hugh Morrison's fourth pitch into center field for a clean single. Ray Killeen smacked a hard shot to third but Ken Deblois came up with it and forced Agostini at second but the attempted double play Second Baseman Leo Fortier threw wild enabling Killeen to reach second. Chet Hanewich followed with a single to center scoring Killeen.
In the third the Saints made it 2-0 when Jigger Higgins smashed a line triple to right center and two were out and score on Ralph D'Ambra's single between third and short.
St. Raphael scored its final two runs in the sixth. Hanewich doubled to left, went to third on an infield out and scored on Bill Kennedy's long fly to right. Higgins followed with a walk, stole second and third and scored on Ralph D'Ambra's single to left.
Higgins Triples
Meanwhile Parenteau was mowing down his rivals, giving up only three scattered singles during the fiurst six innings. But in the seventh successive singles by Don Berry, Deblois and Vin Gasparro loaded the sacks with none out. Parenteau was equal to the occasion, however, as retired the side without a run.
Two For Warren
In the ninth Parenteau gave up a lead-off triple to Don Berry, but got Deblois on strikes and Gasparro on a grounder to short. Then Joe Harvey hoisted a lazy fly to center, but Higgins and D'Ambra got their signals cross and the ball ended up by popping out of Higgins glove for a two-base error with Berry scoring. Don Fitting laced a single over short to scsore Harvey with the final run of the game.
In addition to being the offensive star of the afternoon for the Saints with three singles, Agostini handled 11 chances flawlessly.
